Chaos at International Terminal

It is well-known that Marsh Street in Arncliffe often suffers traffic jams and that those traffic jams can occur at any day of the week. Traffic jams on weekdays, especially during peak hours are nothing unusual. Even traffic jams on Saturday are decreasing in rarity. But in most parts of Sydney, Sunday traffic jams are still quite unexpected. Marsh Street is different.

And the traffic jams don't just affect traffic going to the airport. It also affects traffic going past the airport.

On Sunday, May 13, I went to the area for two reasons:

The International Terminal Exit Lane

Here it is, at 8:35am on a Sunday Morning, a traffic jam on the exit lane to International Terminal. The other lanes are not jammed, as you can see. It is really just the International Terminal that is causing the traffic jam.

Just after the Marsh Street/M5 Intersection

8:45am. Here on the intersection between Marsh Street and the M5 entry and exit ramps, we see traffic trying to get onto the airport side of the intersection. One of the two traffic police that are trying to prevent the intersection from completely seizing up is also visible.

Before the Marsh Street/M5 Intersection

8:46am. And this is the other side of the intersection with the second police officer. Traffic is blocked across all lanes and also causing problems on West Botany Street at the far end. It is obvious that the International Terminal bottleneck does not just affect traffic going to International Terminal but also traffic that is trying to go past Internation Terminal. I can attest from personal experience, that the chaos extends quite a bit further out. One can get blocked trying to simply drive along West Botany Road and also trying to get out of the M5 in a direction away from Sydney Airport (because one is blocked by the traffic turning towards Sydney Airport).
